we recently got the chance to see Sun child, the folk project created by multi instrumentalist and songwriter brooke garwood, on April 10, 2025. the set had the feel of a show you happen upon by chance and find yourself thinking about for days after. It wasn’t showy or overproduced β€” instead, it leaned into intimacy, drawing the audience in with a quietly magnetic presence and a clear focus on the music itself.

She opened with β€œFloating,” a track longtime readers may remember from an earlier feature on the blog. Hearing it live gave the song new weight β€” atmospheric and layered, it set the tone for what would become a thoughtful, unhurried performance.

Sun child led a tight four-piece band, handling vocals, guitar, and piano herself. Her boyfriend, Jeremy Prince, played bass, joined by a guitarist and drummer. The dynamic between them was evident β€” relaxed, instinctive, and rooted in genuine connection. One standout moment came when jeremy stepped over to the piano to play a textured, synth-driven transition between songs. It was an unexpected, cinematic interlude that subtly expanded the emotional arc of the set.

Midway through, Sun child shared a story about meeting Robert Lester Folsom at a Florida farmer’s market and eventually singing backup in his band. Later, she dedicated a song to him as he watched from the side of the stage β€” a small but moving gesture that hinted at a deeper musical lineage. It was a quiet merging of past and present, framed without sentimentality but rich with meaning.

Though she kept banter to a minimum, her presence was compelling. A bit of unintended comedy surfaced when her mic stand kept slipping during a song, and jeremy adjusted it in real time β€” a candid, human moment that landed well with the crowd.

In a time when many live sets chase spectacle, Sun child chose a different route. Her voice was warm and clear, and the audience responded with rare attentiveness. It was a performance that trusted in the strength of the material β€” and that trust paid off.
